CETA - putting transparency and consumer choice at risk
Tuesday, 7 February 2017
Research conducted by Testbiotech has shown that cows and their offspring stemming from cloned bulls are registered in a professional breeders database in the UK. It is likely that a considerable number of animals stemming from clones have already entered the EU. At present, the EU has no labelling or registration requirements for these kinds of imports, which makes it almost impossible to identify breeding material stemming from cloned bulls. The research was commissioned by the Greens/EFA Group in the EU Parliament.
Testbiotech criticises experiments to create chimeric embryos
2 February 2017 / Testbiotech is highly critical of experiments attempting to create chimeric embryos by inserting human embryonic cells into embryos from animal species. In the experiments, human cells were injected into embryos taken from cattle and pigs. The cells then became an integral part of the embryonic development of the pigs, and part of various tissues. Testbiotech is warning against a development which can seriously damage the principle of human dignity.
Member States and the EU Commission met in Brussels today
27 January 2017 / Today representatives of the Member States and the EU Commission met to discuss and vote on the cultivation of genetically engineered maize. The EU Commission wants to give new authorisations for the cultivation of genetically engineered maize before the growing season 2017 starts. Three variants of transgenic maize expressing insecticidal toxins, registered as MON810, Maize 1507 and Bt 11, are being considered. Monsanto, DuPont/Pioneer and Syngenta are pushing for the market introduction of the seeds. At today's vote, no decision was reached.
New Testbiotech project expands the debate to the future of genetically engineered organisms
Thursday, 26 January 2017
Testbiotech has started a brand new project under the heading “Set limits to biotech!”. We will be providing answers to a whole range of questions about biotech, using illustrations and citing examples. The project will, in addition, provide critical analysis and present a set of political demands. Besides including information on the kind of genetically engineered organisms that are likely to be developed in the near future, we will be showing what we need to do to protect our health and the environment.
